You can't become popular if you have low grades.
Some people find it possible to become popular by getting excellent marks, whereas others assume that grades mean nothing and useless in gaining popularity at school.
Personally, I am in favour of the second opinion because, as far as I am concerned, there are lots of other ways to become adored at school.
